The southeast gate of the Roman fort at Neath was excavated in 1950, and laid out for display. It is dual carriageway, consisting of a roadway c7m wide, with a central spina, between two flanking towers attached to the fort wall. Each tower measures about 3m x 2.5m internally. The footings of both the back walls of the guard chambers and the rampart continue unbroken beneath the roadway. There is a drain along either carriageway, the one on the north-eastern side being consideably larger. The fort ditch continues in front of the gateway and must have been spanned by a wooden bridge.
