Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 01627g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Crucorney
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO33042177
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Motte

Please note that some of the sources contain information that, as yet, has not been included in this description field. This will be updated in due course.

Phillips notes that key features of the motte (present area of 801.953m²) at Llanfihangel Crucorney (also known as Tre-Fedw) include a stand of fir trees on top of its partial remains, evidence of quarrying on the north-east side in the 1920s which heavily damaged the site, a circling ditch to the south and east of the motte, and its strategic location on a natural ridge along the river with maximum defence and control of movement along the Abergavenny to Hereford Valley. Phillips interprets the site as being an early motte and bailey with inner defense issues (Phillips 2004).

A small motte known as 'The Moat' stands on the opposite side of the Honddu. Site protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM Mm 63) ( Locock and Maynard 2015).

Contains earthwork of probable medieval motte and bailey fortification (Scheduled Ancient Monument, classed as of national importance), possible derivation of Redcastle manor name and focus of the manorial nucleus. Marked as Roman tumulus on the
OS 1st edition map of 1887 (Procter 2018). Part of Redcastle Manor and associated with Llanthony Priory.
