Clawdd Du Ditch

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 01262g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Monmouth
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO5024912339
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Town defences
Status : Scheduled Monument , listed building II*

Summary :
Ditch which once provided the outer defences of Overmonnow, and through which waters of the River Monnow would have been diverted in times of threat.

Description :
A ditch which once provided the outer medieval town defences of Overmonnow, and through which waters of the River Monnow would have been diverted in times of threat. 'It consists of a long, curved, steep-sided ditch, 3m to 4m wide at the base and 2m deep, orientated roughly NW/SE to the W of the river Monnow.'

The ditch, also known as 'the Black Dyke', would have originally had a large bank on the inner east side, possibly surmounted by a wooden palisade; however, the ditch has since been flattened. A stone bridge crosses its northern end, carrying a road across the ditch towards the Monnow Bridge (MM008) (Cadw 3674).

The medieval ditch may have been a part of an earlier Roman earthwork (Phillips & Phillips 2017).
