Description :
A deserted rural, medieval settlement (scheduled ancient monument MM09).

1973 season, surveyed 1/3 of village, S and E of church. 5 houses identified, 1 of long-house type 16x6m. 1976, survey completed. A total of 25 habitation sites identified. C12th-C18th surface sherds from the village itself.

Hyder Operations have replaced two existing electricity poles that are located within the scheduled Ancient monument of the deserted medieval village of Runston, Monmouthshire. As part of the conditions of the scheduled ancient monument consent the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological trust undertook a watching brief on the excavations of the trenches for these structures. No Archaeological deposits were encountered during the watching brief (Howell, 2000)

Aerial photographs (APs) indicate that potential DMV features extend into adjacent areas to the S and E of the scheduled area (SAM MM095); low enclosure banks, lynchets, a hollow way and building footings/platforms are visible in the area to the E as well as an area of undulating ground within a former enclosed area of woodland identified on the 1st edition OS map as 'Peaseland Wood'. A hollow way also extends down the slope to the S of the scheduled area. APs also indicate scrub woodland appears to be regenerating within the scheduled area (Roberts 2015).

During a walkover survey by GGAT in 2017 (E007424) potentially new features were identified, including additional linear mounds and ditches aligned N to S, located to the N and NE of Runston Chapel. (Roberts 2017)
