Description :
NANT HERBERT is a small circular hill slope enclosure in Mynydd Pen-hydd, about 4km NW of Maesteg. It stands at 270m above OD on ground falling gently to the N. The enclosure is about 24m in diameter, covering an area about 0.05ha. It is surrounded by single bank and a shallow ditch, more pronounced on the upper side (south) where the ditch is well defined (2m wide) and the bank is 2.5-3 m wide and 0.5m high. Crossed by a modern stone wall from W to E, the north part is nearly destroyed by forestry operations.
The ditch has more depth on the W and SW where the external height is nearly 1 metre. On the north half, bank and ditch are only traceable as a scarp 0.6m high, and completely lacking on the NE. There is no sign of interior structures. The site is overgrown and according to RCAHMW (1963), it should be regarded as a ring-cairn (RCAHMW 1963 ; CADW 1986-2006).

This was rejected as the result of the field visit carried out as part of GGAT 72 Prehistoric Funerary and Ritual Sites Survey. An interpretation as a medieval ringwork is also possible. (Wiggins and Evans 2005)
