Castle Mound and Bailey, Llangovan

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00890g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Raglan
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : SO45170702
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Motte and bailey
Status : Scheduled Monument

Summary :
Phillips notes that motte and bailey castle at Llangovan, Penyclawdd is also known as Tre Castle (castell meaning - castle town) and that the site is mostly occupied by farm buildings, with surviving and overgrown elements to the northeast and south. The site was surveyed as having a domed surface area of 225.887m², the height of the motte at 6.8m above the ditch at its highest point and the whole earthwork has a base area, again truncated on the south, of 1095.035m². It is also noted that further defensive measures are evident in the form of a ditch encircling the bailey, and the location of the site with no obvious vantage points appears to be agricultural. Phillips concludes identifying the site as an early motte and bailey which is not representative of its original construction in shape or size which would have been much larger originally (Phillips 2004).
