Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00774w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Margam
Unitary authority : Neath Port Talbot
NGR : SS82078706
Site Type (preferred type first) : Iron Age Earthwork

Summary :

Description :
The site is in a forestry plantation (although the enclosure itself is not planted), at 220m above O.D. on ground falling to the W, in an area above 0.1 ha, just outside to the NE boundary wall of Margam Deer Park. The structure appears to have consisted of a simple oval enclosure, about 42m long from N to S and about 33m wide. The W side is largely destroyed.
The enclosure is defined by a single bank, best preserved on the E (3.5m wide; 0.7m high) and an outer ditch. The entrance has not been defined (RCAHM 1976 in CADW 2006).

Cwm Philip West. The site lies at 220m above OD on ground falling to the W, just outside the NE boundary wall of Margam Deer-park. The structure appears to have consisted of a simple oval enclosure, about 42m long from N to S by 33m wide though the W side is largely destroyed; the area is about 0.1ha. It is defined by a single bank, best preserved on the E where it is 3.5m wide and 0.7m high an apparent external ditch probably being merely where material has been scooped out to form the bank. The position of the entrance is uncertain. The annexe shown on the S on the 6in OS map is non-existent and is probably due to misinterpretation of the scarp of a hollow way that descends the slope some yards SE of the enclosure. The site is now in a forestry plantation though the enclosure itself is not planted. [in 1976].
