Hen Eglwys Chapel/Cryke Chapel

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00765w
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Margam
Unitary authority : Neath Port Talbot
NGR : SS80128652
Site Type (preferred type first) : Medieval Chapel
Status : Scheduled Monument , listed building I

Summary :
'Chapel of Cryke, Grugwallt'. Hen Eglwys. Evidence points to date of about 1470.

Description :
'Chapel of Cryke, Grugwallt'. Hen Eglwys. Evidence points to date of about 1470. Chapel built of stone rubble construction with walls 1.0m thick. 67ft by 24ft. Slight hint on air photograph of churchyard enclosure but not clear. RCAHMW (1982, 275-6 MG23) is sceptical about the existence of a Cryke Grange, but includes this monument in a catch-all entry for structures which have in the past been attributed to it. Williams (2001, 306) calls this Capel Mair, and notes that it had a seemingly circular enclosure with burials, and was associated with a holy well, Ffynnon Mair (?PRN 00764w). This is probably the Capel Mair o Ben y Graig mentioned by Merrick (ed James 1983, 102), and the Craig y Capel dedicated noted by Wade-Evans (1911, 51).
