Description :
The precinct wall of the abbey complex, sections of which survive up to 2.5-3m in height, is particularly significant. This structure, which defined the outer boundary of the Abbey complex and enclosed 27 acres, together with the associated gatehouse are considered to be among some of the most important surviving examples their type in Britain. Eighty-six Cistercian Abbeys were founded in Britain; of these it only possible to accurately define the extent of the precinct boundary in sixteen cases, and of these, only seven retain lengths of their precinct walls and associated gateways, Tintern being one of the seven (Roberts,Gerrard & Graham 2009)

Stretches of the outer precinct wall associated with Tintern Abbey (PRN 00713g). The identified stretches are all currently protected (SAM ref. MM157). No additional stretches were identified during the field visit (E002126). It was noted that the wall is in need of conservation/consolidation in places; in particular the stretches at the S edge of the precinct adjacent to Long Way, which are being undermined by tree roots (Bowden and Roberts 2012).
