Gelligaer Stone

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00635m
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Bedlinog
Unitary authority : Merthyr Tydfil
NGR : SO10340340
Site Type (preferred type first) : Early Medieval Inscribed stone
Status : Scheduled Monument

Summary :
A roughly squared pillar-stone in a small enclosure stands on Cefn Gelligaer close to the Roman road from Gelligaer to Penydarren.

Description :
Inscription now virtually illegible, but it was transcribed from a rubbing made in 1898. Redknap and Lewis (2007, 302-5 G27, give the reading as [N]EFR[O]IHI[-, which is unintelligible. Only the IHI now remains. The 'enclosure' on the edge of which it stands may be a Bronze Age ring cairn (PRN 05816m).

A roughly squared pillar-stone in a small enclosure stands on Cefn Gelligaer close to the Roman road from Gelligaer to Penydarren. Made of the local Pennant series and possibly reduced in length. Lettering indicates a late C6th or early C7th date (RCAHMW 36, no.842).
