Summary :
It was a gate house which was erected by Richard de Granville between 1129 and 1130.

Description :
Neath Abbey gate house was erected by Richard de Granville between 1129 and 1130. In 1147 the abbey became Cistercian. The Welsh ravaged it in 1200 and in 1539 it was destroyed even more by Henry the VIII.
The remains consist of the north side of the gate house. It is a single storeyed, stone-rubble building with walls 0.8m thick and from 2.5m to to 5.0m high. It is divided by a masonry wall into 2 rooms with a communicating door space at the north end.

The interior, which is partly stone-flagged, is from 1.0m to 2.0m below the present outer level. There is a round headed freestone doorway in the east end. The south wall of the structure is best preserved and incorporates two large plain windows with pointed arches at the west end. Apart from 12th century E door, the architectural details are 13th/14th century.
