Building, Portskewett Hill

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00495g
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Portskewett
Unitary authority : Monmouthshire
NGR : ST4979088655
Site Type (preferred type first) : Roman Building / Roman temple / Roman villa
Status : Scheduled Monument

Summary :
Remains of high-status Roman building.

Description :
On summit of Portskewett Hill 'about 175 ft above sea level'. 'A short length of rubble walling 2ft 4ins broad has been uncovered, and the surrounding soil littered with roof tiles and other debris. Beside the wall were found bones of a young child, fragments of red-painted wall-plaster a piece of samian, form 31, and...nine bronze coins. Pieces of iron slag have also been found, and iron has been worked at various periods on the southern slope of the hill.'. Now appears as hollows and low mound in which stone appears; part of a wall can be seen. The site is heavily covered with bracken, brambles and shrubbery. Presence of wall-plaster suggests that it is a high-status site originally suggested as villa, also (in litt) as hill-top temple. Site location seems more typical of temple, but iron slag/working (if associated) may be more indicative of secular occupation. [Ironworking separately numbered 504g] (Evans 2001)
