Description :
One of a group of three cairns near the summit of Mynydd Aberdare (PRN4567m). A loose heap of blocks, slabs and boulders up to 0.6m across, mainly of sandstone and some quartzite; partly grass-covered. It is no longer possible to distinguish the kerbing and possible remains of the cist noted by RCAHMW in 1966, although a couple of large slabs up to 0.7m across can be seen in the middle and may represent the remains of the cist. It is situated on a very marked false crest at the top of a very steep hillside. Dimensions: 7.6m diameter, c0.6m high
(1966/1976) On the W end of a rounded moorland ridge, with wide views to W and S. A circular cairn of stones and slabs, 6.1m in diameter and 0.6m high, with traces of a kerb of large boulders. A slight hollow in the centre contains two loose slabs, possibly from a destroyed cist. An inner ring of what appears to be drystone walling, exposed by recent excavation on the S and SE is probably only the overlapping edges of the slabs of which the cairn is built. (Source 01)
(1979) Carn Pentyle-hir is situated on the west slope of a steep-sided ridge. It is generally as described by the RCAHM, except that the kerb of boulders and central hollow have been obscured by modern stone dumping. (Source 02)
(1985) A small cairn, 0.5m high, covered with grass and bilberries, with a hole in the middle. Some large slabs of stone are showing on the bank, and smaller ones inside the hole. (Source 05)
