Llangybi Standing Stone

Summary :
Described by Bradney (1921) as the most ancient object in the parish, the standing stone is situated in Waen-ffeirad (Priests' Meadow) and is thought to be the stone erected to commemorate the spot where St Cybi pitched his tent upon arrival from the River Usk.

Description :
Described by Bradney (1921) as the most ancient object in the parish, the standing stone is situated in Waen-ffeirad (Priests' Meadow) and is thought to be the stone erected to commemorate the spot where St Cybi pitched his tent upon arrival from the River Usk. The standing stone is a triangular shaped conglomerate situated in improved pasture. The stone is wide at its base, quite thick and rises to a point.

Dimensions: width 1.7m; thickness 0.3-0.5m; height 1.7m
(1921) The most ancient object in the parish is a standing stone situated half-way between the church and the river in a meadow known as Waen-y-ffeirad (the priests meadow), it is possible that this stone commemorates the spot in the meadow in which Cybi (C6th) pitched his tent on his arrival by boat up its river. (Source 04/01)

(1957) The stone is 2m high & 1.4m wide at base & 0.4m thick. It is of conglomerate & has a pointed top. It is very weathered. Stone stands in a slight, probably cattle worn, hollow. There is no associated mound of visible trace of other similar stones. (Source 04)

(1987) The stone is situated in a large flat field in the flood-plain of the river Usk, E of Llangibby. The field is growing a grass crop for hay. The stone stands in a small depression, 3 by 2m, with nettles around it. It is of reddish stone, 1.7m high, 0.3m thick, and 1m across the base, narrowing to a point at the top. It is orientated NW-SE. There are traces of a wide gently curving groove on the NW side. (Source 05)

(1992) ".(The) local folklore is that the stone marks the spot where St Ciby landed when he sailed from Cornwall.known locally as St Cilby's stone". (Source 06)
