Description :
The castle is undisturbed in woodland. The stonework is very overgrown with ivy, small trees etc. but is for the most part in reasonable condition.

Phillips notes that Llangiby Castle is not accessible as it is situated with the private grounds of Llangiby Estate. Whilst the site has no known documentary evidence for the period of Phillips’ study, he states that Llangiby estate passed to the de Cares in 1245 but that construction of the castle (called Tregrug meaning ‘home of the heather’, farm/town or hill/town) was most likely not started until 1312. It is also noted that when Roger Mortimer granted a charter to the town of Usk, he called himself the Lord of Tregrucke; the site was interpreted as a masonry castle with no sign of the existence of a previous earthwork castle (Phillips 2004).
