Summary :
Castle consists of inner/outer ward, each surrounded by a moat. Outer ward is defended by an earthen bank. Entrance on SW where foundations of gate were found.

Castle consists of inner/outer ward, each surrounded by a moat. Outer ward is defended by an earthen bank. Entrance on SW where foundations of gate were found.

A masonry castle of the 12th to 14th centuries strategically located next to a tidal ford across the Ewenny River, and also at the upper limits of the rivers normal tidal reach. It was originally built in earth and timber with a ditch designed to fill with water at high tide, and the early 12th century masonry keep subsequently erected within the inner ward is thought to be one of the oldest Norman stone buildings in South East Wales (Roberts 2003, 26).

The castle in included in the Vale of Glamorgan Council's List of County Treasures (Vale of Glamorgan Council).
