Cairn, Garn Lwyd (Llangeinor Common 3)

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 00058m
Trust : Glamorgan Gwent
Community : Garw Valley
Unitary authority : Bridgend
NGR : SS9199190149
Site Type (preferred type first) : Bronze Age Cairn
Status : Scheduled Monument

Summary :
Circular heap of grey sandstone with grass-covered edges and dug out in the middle; the stones appear to go below the present level of the surrounding ground.

Description :
A circular heap of grey sandstone with grass-covered edges and dug out in the middle, revealing that it is at least 0.8m thick from the top to the lowest point of the cutting; the stones appear to go below the present level of the surrounding ground. Most of the sandstone blocks are under 0.3m across, but there are some larger ones, particularly in the cutting.
Intervisible with cairns 57m and 347m. Not a ring cairn, though it was described as such by RCAHMW. Dimensions: 12.0m diameter; c0.5m high (1956) Sited just below the crest of a hill, the cairn is much mutilated and the centre has ben scooped out. It has a diameter of 14.0m and a maximum height of 0.3m. (Source 02)

(1965/1976) A ring cairn on ground falling fairly steeply to the NE. The ring is formed by a bank of medium-sized boulders, about 2.5m wide and 0.3m high, 11.6m in diameter overall. The centre has been dug out. (Source 01)

(1982) The siting of the cairn is unusual, being on a steep slope. It measures 14.0m overall down the slope (SW-NE) and 12.5m transversely. The only evidence for it being a ring cairn is a short length of possible bank on the NW. There is much loose stone, particularly on the N and S sides, which may be the result of clearance. (Source 04)

(1985) The cairn is situated high up on the north-east facing slope of the ridge, on open moorland. It consists of an oval bank of turf and stones c 0.3m high, 12m east-west and 10m north-south in diameter. There is no bank on the upper, west side. The stones are spread over irregular area on the north and south sides of the cairn, being spread widest on the north side. In the middle there is a rectilinear reed-filled hole, aligned east-west, 5m long, 1.2m wide and 0.7m deep. It is full of stones. Its sides are vertical and the bottom is flat. (Source 06)
GGAT 72 Prehistoric Funerary and Ritual Sites Project

Observations noted during a field visit by GGAT in 2016 indicate that the location of the cairn indicates that it potentially aligned with the setting of the sun,
which would descend the horizon behind the hill/ridge line to the west, when viewed from the now enclosed land at Cyffog. (Roberts 2016)
