Summary :
Nant Crew inscribed stone, now sited in Cefn Coed Church. It is a square-sectioned pillar stone with a 6th century inscription on one face, which may be translated 'of [?Er]camaglos. Here lies [...]' . There is an incised cross on one of the adjacent faces, added in 7th-9th centuries.


Description :
Redknap and Lewis (2007, 157-9 B1) read the very worn inscription on this pillar stone as: ...]CAM[AG]LIHICIACITN[I]FI[ ] (= of [?Er]camaglos. Here lies [...]), which they date to the first half of 6th century. The cudely-pecked equal-armed cross was added in 7th-9th century.

Pillar stone, c5ft high (above ground) and square in section, each face about 1ft wide at base, tapering to 9 inches at top.
West face - Latin inscription reading downwards:
(FA)MA ( )I / HIC IACIT / N (I) ( ) II /
nORTH FACE: iNCISED CROSS C 1FT 6 INCHES FROM TOP OF STONE
Has been used as a gatepost, 3 holes bored through it, one at top, two near bottom, all affecting W face.

Unrecorded monument, found May 1957 by Mr D Webley, N of Cantref reservoir, c 300 yds NNW of where the Nant Crew brook enters it (approx SS 993 165). [The original findspot is over the county border in Powys.]

Nant Crew inscribed stone, now sited in Cefn Coed Church (this NGR). No further information available.
