Roman Bridge, Penmachno
Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 4648 Trust : Gwynedd Community : Bro Machno Unitary authority : Conwy NGR : SH8067552919 Site Type (preferred type first) : MEDIEVAL BRIDGE Status : Scheduled Monument , Listed Building II
Summary : The ruined bridge over the Afon Machno known as "Roman Bridge" consists of a single span of 8.2 metres. It no longer has parapets, and the carriageway masonry was removed: now there is only a turfed route across the bridge.
The age of the bridge is uncertain. It is considered to be of 16th- or 17th-century date, and is almost certainly the predecessor of the 19th-century Pont y Pandy. It is possible that it may be Pontrhydgynon, a bridge referred to in the 1662 general sessions report as "ancient".
Description : Roman bridge, a single segmental arched bridge over the Afon Machno, of 27' spand and 9' wide. The bridge is ruined. Age uncertain but it is no doubt the predecessor of the 19th century Pont y Pandy. Probably 16th or 17th century. Condition: ruined. <1>
