Bryn Farm
Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 28114 Trust : Dyfed Community : Llanddewi Velfrey Unitary authority : Pembrokeshire NGR : SN15491833 Site Type (preferred type first) : Roman Road Status : Scheduled Monument
Summary : A c200m length of well preserved Roman Road, designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The feature is visible as a prominent grass-covered agger, c10m wide and up to 0.5m high, running through a boggy field. This section was first identified by Richard Fenton in the early 19th century, subsequently picked up on aerial photographs. The site was proved by trial excavation in 1993/4, which revealed a 2-phase road. The line of the road has been traced further west through aerial phtoography but is not clearly visible on the ground (PRNs 28112 & 28113). This section is in good condition, vegetation cover has returned over the area of excavation. The field is ocassionally grazed but there is no evidence of erosion on the monument, and this area has not been ploughed within living memory of the owners.
Description : A segment of the Roman road west of Carmarthen (PRN 14277) Part of a parchmark and extant agger identified and plotted from aerial photographs between SN14931839 and SN15631824. DS.09.2004
This earthwork represents the well preserved remains of the agger of the Roman road. It runs for about 200m across a wet field with abundant reed. A small trial trench was cut across the earthwork revealing several construction layers sitting above a layer of peat. CFT 1993
