Description : Scheduled SAM-CM373 but under name of "Abererbwll Roman Fort".
A probable Roman fortlet. Parts of the ditch were visible when the site was visited by CPAT in 1998. JH 02.03.2000 based on CPAT 1998
Remains of a small, square earthwork are situated at SN84944152 upon the top of a ridge at 350m above sea level. The site (prior to afforestation) had good all-round visibility but, in particular, commanded the valley to the S, which runs NE-SW. The feature is orientated NE-SW has rounded corners and measures , internally 70m square; it is bounded by an earthen bank from 7.o to 12.0m wide. Externally its height is 1.2m on the SE to 0.6m on the NW and 0.4m on the SW. Internally it averages 0.2m but in the SE has been reduced by ploughing to an outward facing scarp. The site is bisected NE-SW by a modern hedge bank which passes midway through a single entrance 8.0m wide in the SW side. A break in the NE side against the E corner may well be a late or recent cut. Land NW of the hedgebank is afforested and the earthwork has thereby been protected in recent years. To the SE the site is under pasture and has been reduced and spread by ploughing. The general appearance, and tactical siting of this feature strongly supports the possibility that this is a Roman fortlet. (Ordnance Surevy 1976)
