Trawscoed
Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 1999 Trust : Dyfed Community : Trawsgoed Unitary authority : Ceredigion NGR : SN67077272 Site Type (preferred type first) : Roman Fort Status : Scheduled Monument
Summary : The site of a Roman fort that is cut through by the modern B4340 south of Trawsgoed Mansion. The fort was about 165m x 125m in size, enclosing 2.1ha, situated on level ground to the east of the Afon Ystwyth. Some archaeological excavation has been undertaken on the site, in 1962 and 1974. Pottery and coins suggest that the fort was founded in the 1st century AD, but the archaeology of the site shows that the fort and the associated vicus settlement were burnt before 100AD. The fort was then rebuilt to a slightly different plan and continued in use until c.125 - 130AD. DS.27.10.2004
