Newtown, Glandulas Camp, PoW Camp 101

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 85786
Trust : Clwyd Powys
Community : Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn
Unitary authority : Powys
NGR : SO09089018
Site Type (preferred type first) : MODERN PRISONER OF WAR CAMP

Description :
Information from a member of the public and CPAT staff identifies this as the location of the camp (NGR updated accordingly). The site is now G & T Evans timber merchant (Andy Lewis-Pryce and Rich Hankinson, pers. comm., 2013).

A German work camp (Williams 1987).

R J C Thomas, in his 2003 'Twentieth Century Military Recording Project: Prisoner of War Camps (1939-1948)' gives the NGR as SO1209091800 but this may be an error.

Italian PoWs were held here. Have not been on site for several years but there were concrete and clay panel sheds still in one corner. (Brian Poole, pers. comm., July 2014)

Depicted on OS 4th edition 6" map of 1953 when in use as a Ministry of Works Hostel.

It had hostels for PoWs working away from the main camp at Llandrillo (PRN142080) and Llanrhaeadr-ym-mochnant (PRN142081). (Williams 1987)
