Nant Heilyn stone setting
Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 105750 Trust : Clwyd Powys Community : Pentrefoelas Unitary authority : Conwy NGR : SH92355543 Site Type (preferred type first) : PREHISTORIC STONE SETTING Status : scheduled monument
Description : Group of large, flat and edge set stones arranged in an ovoid pattern. Local area appears to have been levelled. Situated on E facing slope adjacent to trackway (PRN 105756).
Seven large stones, some roughly edge-set, situated on level area immediately N of old coach road in position overlooking Alwen valley to E. Placing of stones does not form a circle, but rather an oval NW-SE. Noticable gap to S and smaller gap to N. Stones range between 1.2 x 0.4 x 0.5m to 0.7 x 0.5 x 0.2m. Originally recorded as a kerb circle but perhaps not a true stone circle although certainly a deliberate setting of stones which may be prehistoric (CPAT site visit 7/4/99).
Some stones flat, others edge-set. Could be further stones hiddne beneath long grass. Oval shaped setting. Originally recorded as a kerb circle, now re-interpreted as a ritual stone setting. Scheduled on 24th August 2000. Numbered as CN324(CON) but Cadw admit that this is wrong. Renamed De284(CON). (Cadw, 2000).
