Bryn Beddau stone circle

Primary Reference Number (PRN) : 101697
Trust : Clwyd Powys
Community : Clocaenog
Unitary authority : Denbighshire
NGR : SJ04685255
Site Type (preferred type first) : PREHISTORIC STONE CIRCLE
Status : scheduled monument

Description :
Davies noted a stone circle here c319m SSW of CAR 713B (PRN 100759) consisting of a circle of irregular stone some standing, 48 paces in circumference with a boulder in the centre.

The site formerly lay within the scheduled area which contains several barrows and cairns although the stone circle is not marked on the scheduling map. Revisions to the scheduling excluded the stone circle.

Visits by CPAT in 1996 indicate that the grid reference of SJ047526 (as on the original record) is incorrect and should be SJ04685255.

The description as given by Davies is generally correct although the central boulder was not seen. The circle is intact with stones standing to 0.4m, 9 to 10 stones noted on first visit, some are probably buried. On second visit 13 stones were visible on the surface and others were located by probing. A fallen stone was located east of the circle. Two large stones, probably fallen, were seen NNE of the circle and may indicate an entrance. These are between 1.1m and 1.55m long. Most stones are c 0.55m wide and of similar height. The maximum diameter of the circle is 13.7m NE-SW and 14.3m NW-SE. An outlying near the forest track to the south may have been moved from its original position.

The circle lies in a clearing in the forest now densely covered in heather: some stones may extend under the trees. It would have been visible from the barrows within the scheduled area. (CPAT 1996).

Scheduled 1997 (Cadw). Scheduling description : stone circle approx 15 diameter, comprising 19 stones of varying sizes, some difficult to see, being embedded in the earth. Six stand upright, another 2 lie supine, and one large boulder lies in the centre. No stones are visible on the south, perhaps damaged by silvicultural operations in the past.
